NASHVILLE, Tenn. – There were no questions asked as an event was held where anyone could drop off a gun for a gift card.
The annual event held by Metro Police was at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church on Herman Street Saturday.
Officers were looking for unwanted, unsafe, or even illegal guns. In exchange, Mapco gave away $50 gift cards. Authorities said a total of 61 firearms were turned in.
Mayor-elect Megan Barry was there and said every day is a good day to get illegal guns off the streets.
"This is such an important part of being able to help people get their lives back on track, and the fact that this church has opened its doors, the police force has come down, and we have judges who are helping people work through their issues and take guns off the streets is critical for Nashville," Barry said.
Saturday was also a "safe surrender" for anyone with an outstanding warrant.
According to authorities, 86 people turned themselves in. All but five of them were given favorable consideration and allowed to go home.
