CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A gun was discovered in a student's backpack by a school resource officer Friday morning at Northwest High School in Clarksville.

The 17-year-old student was carrying an unloaded .380 semiautomatic pistol, as well as a magazine loaded with 11 bullets.

Administration at the school notified the school resource officer of the possibility of the weapon on school grounds after several students expressed concerns to them.

"This should highlight how important it is to notify officials if you suspect something is wrong," said Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson. "If it is a behavior you see or a threat you hear, the information you share can resolve a situation. I am very thankful the school administrator and our SRO acted quickly."

The student will be charged with felony weapons on school grounds.
