NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Tennessee's new hand-held cell phone ban takes effect soon.

Starting July 1st, drivers cannot hold cell phones behind the wheel. However, hands free or Bluetooth calls will still be allowed.

That means no scrolling through social media while you're at a red light or trying to punch in an address for directions while you're driving.

The bill aims to cut down on distracted driving. According to a recent study, Tennessee leads the nation in cell phone distracted driving deaths.

To keep yourself in check, ask a passenger to make calls or texts for you and program your GPS before hitting the road.
