One of the largest and oldest historically-black medical colleges in the nation has laid off 55 employees in Nashville.
According to reports, Meharry Medical College confirmed Thursday that it let go about 6.5 percent of its workforce this week.
Meharry President James Hildreth announced the layoffs in a letter Wednesday and said they were needed to "adjust our workforce to optimize our resources and align them to our mission."
College spokeswoman Laura Stephens said the cuts include executive and administrative employees, but no faculty. A school news release said it's the largest private, independent historically black academic health center dedicatedly to educating minority and other health professionals.
