Metro Nashville police said a homeless man stabbed a couple outside a Hermitage gas station early Wednesday morning.

Officers were called to the Mapco on Lebanon Pike near Jacksonian Drive at about 2:00a.m. Wednesday.

According to investigators, a homeless man and a couple were inside the convenience store when the homeless man began arguing with the couple. The clerk was able to separate them and asked them to go outside, police said.

Once outside, investigators said both parties went separate ways. However, the homeless man ran up to the woman and sliced her across her face with a knife. Then, police said he stabbed the man in the torso when he tried to come to the woman's aid.

The couple was taken to separate hospitals, and are expected to survive their injuries.

The suspect was also taken to a hospital, and a detective responded to investigate, police said.
