Homeowner Finds Surprise Under Driveway In East Nashville

Termites, leaky faucets, and plumbing problems. We all know about typical homeowner issues.

One homeowner in East Nashville, however, said he didn't expect to find a room-like structure underneath his driveway.

"It's always been a divot, one that my daughter used to splash in, and I was on the porch doing some work, and my son runs up and he says, 'Hey dad, there's a hole in the driveway,'" Matt Hudson said.

Underneath the asphalt, it looks like a room in a scary movie.

"I speculated at first that it was Narnia, an entrance to Narnia, but the consensus seems to be that it may be an old septic tank," Hudson said.

When Hudson bought a beautiful 1920's home on Eastland Avenue, this was the last thing he would have expected.

"It's four foot deep and four foot wide," Hudson said. "The whole tire and car and tire would fall into the hole."

An expert thinks it's an old septic system from the 1900's.

"It's a very well put together brick structure which is bizarre," Hudson said.

The suspected septic system is inconveniently located next to his garage.

"We're just lucky," Hudson said. "First of all, that a 'baby Jessica' moment didn't happen with my daughter, but secondly, that she didn't just run over it and fall into it with the car."

Hudson bought this home and refurbished it in 2009.

"I've pulled all the code and permit records on this house throughout the years, but I saw no record of any kind of septic tank," Hudson said.

Now, he's just trying to figure out how to fix it.

"I have no idea how long it's been there," Hudson said.

He hopes this story will warn other homeowners in case they encounter a similar divot in their driveway.
