Homeowner shoots and kills intruder early Easter morning

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (WTVF) — A man is dead after allegedly intruding a home during the early morning hours of Sunday.

According to the Robertson County Sheriff's department, they responded to a call regarding a home intruder at a residence on Hoods Branch Road in Springfield.

When they arrived, they found John Whitehead deceased inside the home.

Officers were able to deduce from their investigation that Whitehead had come to the home for the first time on Saturday. According to the homeowner, Whitehead had been acting strangely and claimed to know both the homeowner and his family.

Early on Sunday morning, Whitehead returned to the home where he forced his way inside.

Whitehead was then shot by the homeowner who claimed to he was in fear for his own and his family's safety.

Whitehead's family has since indicated that he suffered from mental health issues.

Currently the District Attorney will not be pursuing charges against the homeowner.

This is an ongoing investigation.
