NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Work continued into Sunday night on the first of the Tennessee Department of Transportation's Fast Fix 8 projects. All lanes of Interstate 40 on the south loop were able to open one hour ahead of schedule Monday.
The progress being made could be seen on the Interstate 40 Bridge over Joe Johnston Avenue.
For safety, officials have been keeping camera crews away from the construction area, but Sunday they released some new footage of their own.
In it, workers were seen moving bridge beams and end pieces and setting them in place.
It's a big project, that's requiring dozens of people to work around the clock, day and night.
Meanwhile, all traffic was diverted around the project, but TDOT officials said it's a small price to pay.
“We will have been able to get in and get out, and we won't have to spend maybe two or three years of reduced lanes with concrete barriers, with temporary closures for contractors to get their equipment in and out," said Paul Degges, TDOT Chief Engineer.
The bridge was scheduled to reopen to traffic at 6 a.m. Monday, but opened one hour early.
