Investigations underway after Lebanon officer-involved shooting, homicide

LEBANON, Tenn. (WTVF) — Officials have confirmed that a Lebanon Police Department officer was involved in a shooting on Friday night.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the incident began around 7:00 p.m. Friday when LPD officers responded to a shooting that took place on Beard Avenue in the Head Homes Housing Authority neighborhood.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a male suspect shooting a woman. An LPD officer fired his service weapon at the man, who was believed to still be armed. The LPD officer shot the man who was firing at the woman.

Police report that woman later died as a result of her injuries.

Following the shooting, the man the LPD officer shot was transported to an area hospital for treatment before he was later taken by medical helicopter to a Nashville hospital.

Investigations are ongoing as officials work to determine the events that took place prior to the shooting.

The TBI reports that no officers were injured in this incident.

The Lebanon Police Department released a statement on the Facebook page following the shooting,

It is with great sadness that we must inform the public of the death of a local resident during this incident. Upon our response to a call of a disturbance in the Head Homes area, our officers observed a male firing a weapon at a female. A preliminary investigation shows our Officer returning fire to end the threat. The suspect has been taken to a local hospital for treatment. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the victim. We will be releasing more information, including body-worn video as the investigation continues.

Body camera footage is set to be released by the Lebanon Police Department.
