NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Boating season is quickly approaching and this week, a bill was introduced that could to better align penalties for boating under the influence with the penalties for driving under the influence.
Lawmakers say the consequences of driving under the influence like vehicular homicide could also be committed by a person operating a boat under the influence.
Right now, the legal limit is .08 for both DUI and BUI. However, the punishments are not the same. If the bill passes, it's unclear how closely aligned the laws would be.
The bill was first introduced to the legislature on Monday. It passed first Consideration, and it is expected to be brought back up Thursday.
