NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — With back-to-school shopping in full swing, one Nashville church is helping parents and their kids start the school year on a positive note.

Riverside Seventh-day Adventist Church located at 800 Youngs Lane hosted a unique back-to-school event on Saturday. Area youth received free school supplies, backpacks, sports physicals, and uniforms but they also received career inspiration from professionals.

“This year, we wanted to engage youth and their parents a little more by offering a space where they can connect with professionals in a field they are interested in, or one in which they are in need of a service,” said Andrea Kinzer, the event’s main organizer.

While eating lunch, children had a chance to talk to with attorneys, doctors, social workers, and nutritionists during a career fair.

"I wanted them to see professionals who have gone through the public school system and did really well to hopefully let them know that they can do really well also," organizer and church member Dr. Wonder Drake said.

About 200 students registered to attend the event.
