A local lawmaker tried to sell a knock off AK-47 at a lemonade stand Wednesday morning.
Rep. Mike Stewart plans on introducing a bill that would restrict the private sale of assault rifles.
Stewart said criminals and terrorists can avoid background checks by purchasing guns through private legal exchanges.
Stewart bought the weapon Tuesday night. He was trying to sell the knock off AK-47 for $700 at a lemonade stand on the corner of Union Street around 7:30 a.m.
He was also selling cookies and lemonade to illustrate how easy it is to do a private gun deal.
Stewart was taking off $100 for anyone willing to do a background check.
The bill failed in subcommittee Wednesday in a 4-2 vote.
