Girl power was the focus of a special event in Madison.

Girls to the Moon is a "campference" designed to help girls boost their confidence and leadership skills. The day-long event was held at Nossi College of Art on Saturday.

Girls participated in sessions on everything from bullying, to money management and body image.

They also had the chance to connect with possible mentors. Participants said the approach works.

“We’re here, this is our second year,” said Aliveah Holt, a participant. “We thought it would be a good experience to learn some new stuff we didn't learn last year.”

“What we want to do is break up all those boxes that get in the way of being the best you and pave the way for people to be who they are going to be,” said Knight Stivender, co-founder of Girls to the Moon.

Around 300 people attended. There were 22 speakers that ranged from musicians, to a Nasa astronaut and visual artists.

NewsChannel 5's Tuwanda Coleman was one of the speakers.
