A man on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Sex Offender Registry for attempted rape has been charged with criminal attempt to commit aggravated robbery in a separate incident.

Authorities with the Shelbyville Police Department said they responded to the Kangaroo Market in the 700 block of South Cannon Boulevard Tuesday for a disturbance.

A female victim told police a white man approached her as she was putting air in one of her tires. He allegedly told her, “I have a gun, don’t make a scene. I need a ride out of here.”

According to reports, the victim tried to remain calm, get in her car, and leave. The man then began pulling on the driver door, attempting to get her out of the car to possibly take the vehicle.

When a witness heard the victim’s cries, the suspect fled on foot, but the entire event was caught on the store’s security camera.

Police later identified the suspect as John Roy Polly, Jr. They also found evidence in his room at the Magnolia Motel.

Polly has been on the TBI Sex Offender Registry for attempted rape. After Tuesday’s disturbance, he was charged with criminal attempt to commit aggravated robbery.
