Two people were killed in a crash in Putnam County that closed a portion of Interstate 40.
Troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said the wreck happened early Sunday morning near mile marker 290 in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40.
According to a preliminary investigation, the crash involved a passenger vehicle and a commercial vehicle.
Authorities said it appeared the eastbound passenger vehicle crossed the median and hit the tractor trailer which had been traveling westbound causing the vehicle to go under the trailer and catch on fire.
Both people inside the passenger vehicle were killed. Their identities have not been released.
The driver of the tractor trailer received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
It was unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.
The investigation was ongoing.
