Authorities identified the victim as 27-year-old Labrone D. Williams.
Officials with Metro Nashville Police said Williams' motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the collision.
According to a preliminary investigation, Williams was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed when a vehicle merged into his lane. Authorities said he could not stop in time, so he veered into the retaining wall.
Williams was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.
Officials said the vehicle that merged in front of him was not found.
Several lanes of I-24 were shut down for nearly 6 hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
The wreck cleared around 3:30 a.m.
Authorities said the primary contributing factor in the crash was speed. The investigation remained ongoing.
