Police have identified the man killed and two others injured during an apparent shootout in North Nashville.

The incident happened in the 1600 block of 12th Avenue North around 7 p.m. Sunday.

Officers were nearby when they heard gunshots and responded to the scene, where they found three victims.

Police said 31-year-old Charles Eugene Smith was found with multiple wounds inside a crashed Jeep Cherokee. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Another man, identified as 23-year-old Christopher Hatcher, also suffered multiple wounds and was found in the road. Police said he was in a Nissan Altima at the time of the shooting.

He was also taken to Vanderbilt, where his condition was not known.

According to police, Hatcher’s friend, 32-year-old Victoria Johnson, received a non-critical wound to her arm. She was treated and released.

Authorities said evidence suggests the two men were shooting at each other, although a possible motive was not yet known. The investigation remained ongoing.
