Six people were injured after a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into an SUV near downtown Nashville.

The incident happened overnight on Interstate 40 near Lafayette Street.

Officials with Metro Nashville Police said a car collided with an SUV that was carrying four people. They said alcohol likely played a factor in the crash.

The man and woman inside the car were both injured, in addition to those in the SUV.

They were all taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the driver of the car appeared to be intoxicated. Charges were pending in the case.

Debris was scattered along the roadway and shut down the interstate for about an hour.

None of their identities were released.
