Melva Black said she really thinks her Dad is the best father in the whole wide world, and she proved it by throwing him a big bash.
Friends and family filled the tenth floor ballroom at the Maxwell House Hotel Saturday to celebrate the life of former Metro Councilman Melvin Black, a retired teacher and coach.
The event was also a way to wish him a very happy 80th birthday.
It turned out, he wasn’t expecting it!
“They have really surprised me with my 80th birthday celebration, and I just got a lot of friends and family members that are here that I didn’t realize were going to be here,” Black said. “I had no earthly idea this kind of thing was going on, so I’m elated to just be able to share this 80th birthday with all my friends.”
In his honor, the family established the Melvin Black Athletic Scholarship for a student at Pearl Cohn High School as a way to recognize his contributions and to also help a young person hoping to attend college.
