A police officer was able to alert residents of an apartment fire after spotting smoke while on patrol.

At least three residents have been displaced after the early morning apartment fire in Hermitage.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Friday at the Canyon Ridge Apartments on Central Pike.

The smoke was first spotted by a patrol officer for the Metro Nashville Police Department, who just happened to be driving by at the time.

She called 911 and then began helping residents get out of the building.

Everyone was able to get outside by the time firefighters arrived thanks to that officer. Her name was not known.

Although the affected units weren’t a total loss, the apartments sustained heavy smoke and water damage, mainly from the sprinkler system.

The complex’s manager said they would be able to repair the damage.

The American Red Cross was brought in to assist three people displaced by the fire.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown. It’s not believed to be suspicious.
