Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Jeff Bivins will take over as chief justice in September.

According to the court, Bivins was unanimously elected by his fellow jurors to a four-year term. He was set to replace current Chief Justice Sharon Lee.

Bivins was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2014 by Governor Bill Haslam. Before that, he served on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals for three years. He also has served as a trial court judge and on the Board of Judicial Conduct. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law.

The chief justice has been responsible for the court's administrative functions.

In a news release, Bivins praised Lee for helping modernize the court system and said it was "a privilege to guide the court on the heels of her excellent leadership."
