A teenage student from Summit High School has died after sustaining injuries from riding on the back of a vehicle in Spring Hill.

The tragic incident happened Sunday on Dryden Drive in Williamson County, near the Maury County border.

Officials said 15-year-old Max Hollis and another teen were somehow riding on the back of a vehicle when they fell off.

Hollis was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, but passed away around 3 a.m. Monday.

The other teen was not seriously hurt.

A prayer vigil was held at Summit High School Sunday night after word spread of the incident.

Williamson County Schools director Dr. Mike Looney tweeted encouragement and support Monday morning.

Hollis' family said Max was a good student, well-loved, very family-oriented and had many friends.

Summit High Principal Sarah Lamb released the following statement Monday morning:

“We cannot begin to express the grief our school community is feeling with the loss of Max Hollis. Max was full of laughter and love for his family, friends and Summit High School. He was a member of the Spartan football program who worked hard on and off the field and proudly represented his family, team and school. Max’s family has strong connections in our community, and we want to rally around them during this time of need. The Spartan family’s closeness and strength will guide us through our overwhelming grief.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hollis family. We will have extra counselors at Summit and Spring Station tomorrow for any student or staff who needs support during this time.”

Police were still investigating the details of how this happened. They said Dryden Road was a straight road, and not windy. Officers were working to determine if speed was a factor in the crash.

Officials from the Spring Hill Police Department planned to consult with the District Attorney to determine whether or not charges would be filed against the driver.
