A 4-year-old child remains hospitalized one day after being struck by a vehicle in Franklin.

Franklin Police said the incident happened on Liberty Pike at Brick Path Lane near Eddy Lane around 5:53 p.m. Thursday.

The young girl was on the curb with her father waiting for traffic to clear when she unexpectedly darted into the road, according to authorities.

She managed to make it through the westbound lane but ran into an oncoming SUV traveling east.

Police said the child was struck and taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt with serious injuries.

As of Friday morning, she was listed in stable condition.

The driver, a 74-year-old man who was not identified, did everything he could to avoid hitting the child, police said.

Detectives have ruled the incident as an "unfortunate accident." No charges were expected to be filed in the case.
