A man and woman were able to escape their burning home after a large fire broke out at the Sumner County residence.
The call came in shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday along Old Highway 31 East in Bethpage.
Officials on the scene said a man awoke to the sound of flames in the basement. He woke up his wife and the two ran towards the highway to get help.
The man reportedly tried to get inside the basement when he first heard the fire erupt, but the door was too hot to touch.
The couple also had a dog and cat inside the home but both pets were able to get out.
Fire officials said the cause of the blaze wasn’t yet clear but could be electrical. The fire remains under investigation.
