Crews Battle Multiple Brush Fires In Wilson County

It was a busy weekend for fire fighters in Wilson County as several brush fires grew out of control.

After fighting fires throughout the day Saturday, Wilson County EMA officials were back at it again on Sunday near West Saulsbury Road putting out another grass fire.

Luckily no one was hurt, and it didn't reach any structures.

Winds were strong this weekend, and add low humidity, it made for a troubling combination in spreading fires.

Saturday, Wilson County EMA responded to nine brush fires that quickly spread. It prompted the agency to discourage outdoor burning even with permits until conditions got better.

The City of Mt. Juliet was not issuing burn permits Sunday because of the situation.

They responded to a brush fire that got out of control on Old Lebanon Dirt Road. The homeowner said it was like an explosion, that's how fast the flames spread.

The fire burned two acres of land and a shed just steps from the owner's home.

“Even if you are permitted to burn and even if you think you're doing it safely, when you have winds gusts 10 to 15 miles per hours that can carry embers a lot farther than you can think,” said Joey Cooper, of Wilson County EMA.

It can be a surprise even for those who believe they’re doing it safely.
