A former Vanderbilt women's basketball player has been helping local students get ready to head back to school.
Dee Davis hosted her third annual Back to School Community Day this weekend.
Saturday, volunteers filled 1,500 backpacks with school supplies ahead of Sunday’s main event.
The volunteers gathered at the University School of Nashville where Davis is the girl’s basketball coach.
Davis said she feels a sense of duty to give back to the community.
"A lot of families can't afford school supplies, backpacks, haircuts, all these things,” Davis said. “We want to make sure we're able to give back. If you're able to, you should give back."
The event was set to continue Sunday, July 16 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Southeast Community Center in Antioch when they will give away the bags they filled with supplies.
