Many teenagers who celebrated birthdays over the summer will skip the bus line and start driving to school this year.
That's one reason officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department hosted a free driver awareness class for teenagers on Saturday.
The students heard from a woman who knows the dangers drivers face on the road all too well.
Eight years ago, Brittany Leedham was in a car with her boyfriend, Zak, speeding home to make curfew.
She said Zak lost control while passing another car at 70 miles per hour on Holt Road in Brentwood.
He smashed into a tree so hard the car split in two and wrapped around the trunk.
Her boyfriend was killed, and Brittany is in a wheelchair. She said she hopes her story reminds young drivers to be careful while on the road.
