A firefighter has been injured in a house fire in Tullahoma.

The fire happened at a home in the 300 block of Decherd Street around 2:49 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters with the Tullahoma Fire Department responded to the scene where light smoke was showing when they first arrived.

The fire appeared to have been burning in the attic for a while, and authorities said it had weakened the ceiling joists.

As firefighters entered the attic, a 24-year veteran firefighter fell through the attic to the first floor, injuring his shoulder.

He was removed from the scene by other firefighters before being taken to Tennova Healthcare Harton. Officials confirmed he was then transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. They added he was conscious when he was taken from the scene.

Firefighters were able to get the flames under control. Authorities said the fire appeared to be accidental.

Two people inside had been awakened by their pet cat, and all were able to make it out of the home safely.

The fire remained under investigation.
