A local sixth grade teacher has been charged after the discovery of a gun on campus.
The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. Friday in the library of John Early Middle School.
Authorities said a loaded .380 pistol was found inside a backpack behind the library’s counter. Staff notified police.
After the gun was inspected, officials discovered it was loaded with six rounds.
Officials said a teacher, identified as 35-year-old Alex Nation, claimed ownership of the pistol and added he forgot it was in the backpack when he brought it to school.
Authorities confirmed no students were exposed to the gun.
Nation has been issued a state misdemeanor citation that charged him with carrying a gun on school grounds.
He has been placed on administrative leave while the school system conducts an investigation.
