Governor Bill Haslam delivered his sixth State of the State address Monday evening, where he discussed the future of Tennessee.
Governor Haslam said thanks to a strong economy and increase in sales tax revenue, the state had a budget surplus.
However, the state had to cut $500 million in recurring costs to make it happen.
The governor was expected to talk about his ideas that he feels will benefit the future of Tennessee. Not only is he working with more people, construction and businesses but also more money.
“I could not be more optimistic about the future of our economy in Tennessee,” he said.
During a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce, Haslam said he'd like to focus on the increase in money on education.
In his nearly 30 minute speech, the governor also touched base on transportation and how the conversation should expand far beyond Nashville.
“The issue about transportation is that we got to figure out a way to address mass transit, and not only to be bigger roads because that won't solve our problem, but to talk about public transportation,” he said.
