High-Tech Road Survey Vehicle Hits Nashville Streets

Metro Public Works officials have once again been rolling out a high-tech van to document every pothole, every bump, and every crack in Metro Nashville’s neighborhood roads.

The Digital Survey Vehicle has been using lasers and cameras to do the job.

Metro contracted with an outside company that owns the van to record the data.

The goal has been to eventually give each road in Metro Nashville a score from 1 to 100, so Metro Public Works can prioritize which roads need to be repaired and how quickly it needs to be done.

“Nashville roads -- because I've been down here as many years as I have -- are in great shape, except to say that there are some areas that are in less than acceptable shape," said Ron Strine, a technician who has been running the survey vehicle.

The van will map all of the roads Metro has been in charge of, not roadways like interstates, which those with the Tennessee Department of Transportation control.
