Holiday Weekend Travel May Break Records

Heads up drivers, this weekend has been forecast to be a record-breaker in terms of how many vehicles will be on the road.

If you’re traveling, you won't be alone. AAA has projected a record breaking 44.2 million Americans will travel this Independence Day weekend, which will be about one million more compared to 2016.

More than 780,000 Tennesseans have been expected to drive to their destinations.

The good news? Construction will not slow drivers down. Officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation confirmed all construction-related lane closures on interstates and state routes will be suspended from noon Friday until 6 a.m. Wednesday, July 5.

Anyone with plans to travel this holiday weekend for the 4th of July might want to gas up on Friday.

The state's newly passed gas tax has been scheduled to go into effect Saturday. That's the four-cent increase meant to go toward transportation needs in the state.

That being said, most gas stations will likely phase in the price increase instead of doing it all at once.
