The death of an inmate has been under investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities identified the inmate as 31-year-old Tawnya Smith.
According to reports, Smith was booked into the detention center around 12:15 a.m. Monday. She had been charged with two counts of child abuse and neglect, simple possession, and unlawful drug paraphernalia.
Deputies found her unresponsive in her cell around 11:10 a.m. during a routine hourly security check.
CPR was performed and an AED was applied by jail medical staff and emergency crews, but they were unable to resuscitate Smith.
According to a preliminary investigation, there were no visible signs of injury or trauma.
Officials confirmed an autopsy was pending, and the investigation was ongoing.
