The Internal Revenue Service said it has over $17 million in unclaimed refunds for Tennessee residents who failed to file a 2012 tax return.
The law provided taxpayers with a three-year window to claim a refund, but those wishing to collect must file their 2012 returns no later than April 18.
There was no penalty for filing a late return that qualifies for a refund.
IRS spokesman Mark Green said in a news release that the estimated median unclaimed refund for tax-year 2012 in Tennessee is $702.
If no return was filed to claim a refund within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.
Tax forms and instructions were made available at the IRS.gov website on the forms and publications page, or by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM.
