Those with the Lebanon Police Department said they're in the final stages of training after receiving rifles to equip the entire police force.
The department purchased 50 rifles in February after the city passed an ordinance for the purchase late in 2015.
The council member who proposed the idea felt Lebanon police were not properly equipped in case a similar attack like the one in San Bernardino were to occur closer to home.
Officials said the rifles better protect the police officers and citizens.
“With these guns, they really put the power and effectiveness in the ability to do our job,” Cpl. Steven Green said. “It helps protect the citizens of this town.”
Lebanon police felt criminals have been using more powerful weapons and added their officers need to know how to properly respond.
“We are the last ones in Wilson County to receive this type of weaponry,” Cpl. PJ Hardy added. “It’s kind of like insurance, you hate to make that payment every month, but when you need it, you’re thankful you have it.”
The City of Lebanon paid $45,000 for the guns. Since receiving the rifles, the police department had to make adjustments to have them sitting next to the officer or above their heads.
Emergency services units and administration still need to undergo training.
