A state representative said he plans to introduce legislation that would require Tennessee to refer to all of its women's sports teams as the Lady Volunteers.
Representative Roger Kane discussed his measure Sunday at a rally to save the Lady Vols nickname that drew close to 100 spectators before the Tennessee women's basketball team's game with Virginia Tech. Kane's proposal was first reported by the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
Tennessee announced last fall that all of its women's sports teams other than the basketball program would be called the Volunteers. The school said the women's basketball program would continue to be called the Lady Vols because of the tradition it had established in winning eight national titles under former coach Pat Summitt. The move took effect in July.
State lawmakers have been scheduled to convene their next legislative session in January.
