A suspect has been arrested in connection with an overnight robbery of a convenience store in Bellevue.

The incident happened just before midnight Thursday at a Mapco in the 7600 block of Highway 70 South.

According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, 54-year-old Mendell Roland Nichols, Jr. walked in and said he had a gun before demanding cash, beer, and tobacco. Authorities said a gun was never seen.

He allegedly forced employees to get into the cooler, changed his mind and moved them to the office.

The police report stated Nichols said he would kill them if they called police and told them to wait 20 minutes.

Officers found him a short time later walking nearby. The incident was caught on surveillance video at the store.

Police said Nichols was registered as an ex-con stemming from a robbery in November 2015. He's also a convicted sex offender.

According to reports, Nichols had prior convictions for aggravated robbery, robbery, rape, aggravated burglary, and DUI second offense.
