Man On Trial For Sex Crimes Calls Police, Kills Himself

Authorities said they’re investigating after a man facing sex crimes reportedly killed himself at a golf course in Rutherford County.

Officials with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said 70-year-old Gary Welsh was arrested on a sealed indictment.

According to court records, Welsh appeared in court Thursday at 9 a.m. facing two counts of aggravated sexual battery and three counts of sexual battery by an authority figure. Officials with the Murfreesboro Police Department confirmed his trial for those charges began Thursday.

Police said Welsh reportedly went to the Old Fort Parkway golf course early Friday morning and called police to report a body at the golf course.

When police got there, they reported he pulled out a gun and shot himself.

Further details were not available as the investigation remained ongoing.
