Mentor Program Offers Second Chance For Youth

A group of Metro teens who have had run-ins with the law have been getting a second chance thanks to an eight-week community program aimed at setting the kids down the right path.

It's called the G.A.N.G. program, which stands for “Gentlemen And Not Gangsters.”

Most of the kids taking part in the program have been on probation, and mentors have been working with the teens to make sure they don't repeat the mistakes they've made.

“I know what I learned in this class, is to keep our heads up to keep moving forward, to progress and build and take care of our families because we got responsibilities,” said Keiwawn Frierson-Scates, one of the program’s graduates.

Program organizers said so many teens have gone through the mentor program already that the city has been setting up a special juvenile court just for it.
