Police have identified a motorcyclist who was killed in a crash on Interstate 24.

The wreck happened around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on I-24 West near Blue Hole Road.

Authorities have identified the motorcyclist as 41-year-old Courtney V. Elrod, of La Vergne.

According to a preliminary investigation, Elrod was driving his motorcycle at an extremely high rate of speed when a Honda Civic, driven by 21-year-old Ciara Bryant, of Ooltewah, merged into his lane.

Because of his speed, authorities said Elrod hit the Civic and was thrown from the motorcycle.

The Civic then spun out of control and hit a guardrail.

Elrod was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

Reports stated Bryant was treated and released.

A witness told officials it appeared as if Elrod had been racing a white sedan just before the crash.

Charges against Bryant were not anticipated.
