A 20-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Briley Parkway.

The wreck happened before 10 a.m. Saturday in the eastbound lanes between Dickerson Pike and Brick Church Pike.

According to reports, the motorcyclist, identified as 20-year-old John Robert Sanders, of Hendersonville, was traveling on a 2017 Suzuki Ninja.

Witnesses told officials Sanders passed a 2012 Kia Sorento, driven by 33-year-old Leah Lyons, by driving between Lyons' vehicle and another vehicle.

Reports stated Sanders then merged into the left lane in front of Lyons' Kia. Authorities said Sanders then started making gestures while braking off and on quickly.

Witnesses stated Lyons slowed down to give herself distance between her vehicle and Sanders' motorcycle.

Sanders braked again, and Lyons hit the back tire of the motorcycle causing Sanders to lose control.

He then went into the right lane of Briley Parkway East where he was hit by an eastbound tractor-trailer driven by 66-year-old Richard Donahue, Jr. of Florida. Donahue told officials he could not avoid the crash.

Sanders passed away at the scene. Lyons and Donahue were not injured.

Officials said there was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene.

The wreck shut down the eastbound lanes while crews worked at the scene. Westbound traffic was not affected.

The investigation into the fatal crash remained ongoing.
