Choir Comforts Hospice Care Patients

Posted

A group of volunteer singers has been providing comfort to those in hospice care in Nashville, including those who are transitioning to death.

The group, known as the Nashville Threshold Choir, has been volunteering at Alive Hospice for the last year or so, often singing to a handful of patients in their rooms each night.  Frequently, the group has ended up lulling patients to sleep with their soft voices.

"We consider that a standing ovation," Nashville Threshold Choir founder Tammy Heinsohn said.

During a time in their lives when patients can find themselves focusing on what they've lost over the years, hospice care patients said the frequent visits of the Nashville Threshold Choir bring them back to times when life was a little simpler.

Heinsohn said she started the Nashville Chapter of the Threshold Choir after singing at the bedside of her mother 25 years ago.

"It just is, so moving to connect with people at this point of their lives when they don’t have very much time left, and they may not have anyone else to connect with," Heinsohn said.

The Nashville Threshold Choir said they are always seeking new volunteers to help out.  Volunteers said singing with the group is a powerful experience they will never forget.
