Officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation said travelers will not be delayed by road construction during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
TDOT representatives confirmed they will be halting all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways for the Labor Day travel period.
The lane closure activity has been scheduled to stop at noon on Friday, September 1 and begin again at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5.
Authorities said this “will provide maximum roadway capacity for motorists traveling during the busy Labor Day holiday.”
“Because we anticipate thousands of motorists will be traveling Tennessee’s roadways during the Labor Day holiday, we are halting lane closures for the busy weekend,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “We want to do what we can to get travelers to their destinations safely, and without road construction delays.”
Workers will still be present in several constructions zones, so officials said even though lane closures will be stopped, drivers should use caution and obey posted speed limits.
They added any driver convicted of speeding in a work zone with workers present can face a fine of $250 to $500. Those drivers will also face court fees and possible increased insurance premiums.
