An officer with the Clarksville Police Department was back at work after a suspect drove over his leg.

The incident began around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Exxon Hi Road on Highway 76.

Reports stated a man, later identified as Billy McNeil, of Nashville, had been at that location for about 45 minutes. Officials said it’s believed he was on drugs.

Medics were on the scene when Officer Seth Traughber arrived. The medics were able to wake McNeil up after multiple attempts.

Authorities said there were a couple of narcotic prescriptions on the front seat, and Officer Traughber said he detected a marijuana odor coming from inside the vehicle.

The officer approached the vehicle and asked McNeil to get out, but McNeil started the car and tried to shut the door, which hit Officer Traughber.

Office Traughber then told McNeil to stop, but McNeil put the vehicle in reverse and backed out of the parking spot.

McNeil was then grabbed by the officer and told once again to stop. Reports stated McNeil responded, “I can’t do that.” He then put the vehicle in drive and drove off, dragging Officer Traughber and running over the officers’s left leg with the back left tire.

Officials said McNeil left the scene in a 2007 Chevrolet.

Warrants were issued for McNeil on charges of aggravated assault, driving on a revoked license, evading, and resisting.

Officer Traughber was taken to the hospital for abrasions, but officials said he did not have any major injuries and was back at work.

McNeil was taken into custody by the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office around 2 p.m. on outstanding warrants.
