A suspect has been taken into custody after an officer used his vehicle as a barrier during a pursuit across Rutherford County.

Officials with the Smyrna Police Department said the chase began in Smyrna when officers tried to stop 32-year-old Steven Shawl for speeding and possible DUI.

A pursuit ensued, where Shawl allegedly drove into oncoming traffic and ran other vehicles off the road.

The chase became so hazardous an officer had to use his car to end the pursuit on Murfreesboro Road near Parthenon Boulevard in La Vergne.

A trooper with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said Shawl's vehicle spun out and an officer's car was rammed from the front to keep him from taking off again.

Other agencies, including La Vergne Police and deputies, had to assist.

Shawl has also been accused of fighting with officers and resisting arrest.

He was booked into the Rutherford County Jail on a list of charges, including evading arrest, resisting arrest, criminal impersonation, reckless endangerment and driving under the influence.

Shawl was held on a $20,500 bond.
