A body has been recovered from the Cumberland River nearly two days after a swimmer went underwater and never resurfaced.

Officials with the Nashville Fire Department said in a Tweet Tuesday morning that a body had been spotted near Nissan Stadium.

Crews with the Office of Emergency Management were called to the scene. The body was recovered a short time later and taken to Riverfront Park.

A 38-year-old man went missing around 3 p.m. Sunday on the river near the 100 block of 1st Avenue South.

According to witnesses, a man asked for a suit to swim across. He then allegedly began swimming without one, went out a couple dozen feet, and went under. His name was not known.

Fire officials said Metro Nashville Police would have to make positive identification.
