Officials on the scene said the driver of the semi was merging onto I-40 from the I-24 ramp when the truck overturned.
A police officer was also in the area and saw the trailer tip and eventually flip over.
The driver was partially ejected from the truck and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Crews worked throughout the day to remove lumber from the roadway.
Around 3 p.m. the roadway was cleared.
