A photo showing dozens of police officers coming together to pray for a fallen comrade has gone viral.
Memphis Police Officer Verdell Smith was killed late Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle on B.B. King Boulevard.
Justin Welch has been accused of shooting three people at random in downtown before leading police on a chase across town.
He allegedly struck Officer Smith and crashed on B.B. King Boulevard.
Officer Smith was rushed to the hospital, where he died a short time later. He was an 18-year veteran of the department.
Welch reportedly tried to run off but was quickly arrested.
The Commercial Appeal captured the photo of officers gathering to pray for the 46-year-old officer.
Welch appeared before a judge by video on Monday morning. Welch said his family was working on hiring a lawyer, and the judge set a Wednesday hearing to find out who the lawyer is.
