Metro Police Investigate Fatal Shooting

Police have launched an investigation after a man was fatally wounded in a late-night shooting south of downtown Nashville. 

The incident happened around 9 p.m. Sunday in an alley behind 1017 1st Avenue South.

Officials with Metro Nashville Police said 23-year-old Deshawn Lamont Cunningham was standing in the area with two other people when a small, silver car approached.

Police said he and two others were apparently drinking at the time shots were fired. 

Cunningham was struck and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

Detectives were in the process of researching Cunningham’s background.
