Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department have identified the man who was fatally wounded in a shooting on Bell Road.
The incident happened just before 8 p.m. Friday in a parking lot in the 400 block of Bell Road. The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Algernon Cross.
Police said they found Cross on the ground beside his vehicle. He was dead when they arrived on scene.
The driver with Cross, a female relative, said he told her to pull into the parking lot when he saw someone he recognized.
Authorities confirmed Cross had multiple felony cocaine convictions and was on parole at the time of his murder.
Detectives said they were investigating his recent background in an attempt to identify the shooter.
They added they have continued efforts into determining what 36-year-old Jerome Sawyers may know about the murder.
Sawyers was charged Saturday with evidence tampering in the case. He posted a $30,000 bond.
Officials said Sawyers was in the parking lot when they got to the scene, but he has refused to give information on what happened. They had determined Sawyers went through Cross’ pockets after he was shot before walking to a creek and throwing something in.
Sawyers also went to a nearby gas station and returned to the parking lot as officers arrived. Police found marijuana residue on the path Sawyers took to the creek.
Anyone with information on this murder has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
